McMillan Nursery School

Today's children are tomorrow's future

The Early Years Foundation Stage

The Early Years Foundation Stage is a National Curriculum that all children follow from birth up to 5 years old.

There are 7 areas of learning:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Making relationships, Self-confidence and self-awareness, Managing feelings and behaviour.

At McMillan we intend to help children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others. We aim to help our children develop their social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.

Communication and Language

Listening and attention, Speaking, Understanding

We aim to provide children with opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

Physical Development

Moving and handling, Health and Self-care

Our extensive outdoor environment provides opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Our weekly 'Listen and Move' exercise session teaches children to understand the importance of physical activity.

Reading, Writing

We aim to encourage all children to develop their writing skills by providing opportunities for writing throughout our nursery provision. Our outdoor provision enables children to develop their gross motor skills, which is vital for developing their fine motor skills and pencil grip.  At McMillan we believe that children must be given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest and develop a love of reading.

Numbers, Shape space and measure

Opportunities for counting, measuring and problem solving are provided throughout our nursery provision so that children can apply their mathematical thinking in a variety of ways. Our 'endless possibilities' construction and 'pattern corner' enable children to explore and describe shape, space and patterns.

Understanding the World

People and communities, The World, Technology

We intend to guide children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

Expressive arts and design

Exploring and using media and materials, Being imaginative

Our environment enables children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology.
